What is FeV Alloy Type?

FeV Alloy Typerefers to the classification of Ferrovanadium (FeV) based on its chemical composition, particularly the vanadium content and the presence of other elements such as carbon, silicon, and aluminum. These variations define the type of FeV alloyand determine its suitability for different industrial applications, especially in steelmaking and alloy production. The most common way to categorize FeV alloy types is by their vanadium content, which typically ranges from 35% to 85%, and by their carbon content, which is a critical factor in determining the alloy's performance in steel. Based on these factors, the main types include:
Ferro vanadium (19)
  1. 1. High Carbon Ferrovanadium (HCFeV)– Contains 35%–50% Vand higher carbon (up to 2%). It is lower costand used in construction steels, rail steels, and general structural applications.
  2. 2. Medium Carbon Ferrovanadium– Contains around 50%–60% Vwith carbon between 0.1%–0.5%. Offers a balance between performance and cost, used in HSLA steels and automotive components.
  3. 3. Low Carbon Ferrovanadium (LCFeV)– Contains 60%–80% Vwith very low carbon (below 0.1%). Preferred for premium steels, tool steels, and high-performance applicationswhere carbon contamination must be minimized.
  4. 4. High Purity FeV (often categorized separately)– Typically 78%–82% V, with ultra-low carbon, silicon, and sulfur. Used in aerospace, nuclear, and high-end tooling steels.
Each FeV Alloy Typeis produced using different metallurgical methods:
  • Aluminothermic Process(for high-purity or low-carbon grades)
  • Silicothermic Reduction(for medium to high-carbon grades)
  • Slag-based Production(for industrial-grade HCFeV)
The choice of FeV Alloy Type depends on the required vanadium content, desired steel properties, and cost considerations. Higher vanadium content and lower carbon generally mean better steel performance but higher production cost.
